Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), a national laboratory of the United States Department of Energy, launched a digital plate with 16 open source and closed software and tools for research and development in imaging, omics and synthetic biology. These tools can accelerate discovery and bring products to market faster in biosciences.
Examples of software and tools offered include: software to support the design, implementation and automation of DNA validation; software to determine macromolecular structure using crystallographic or cryo-EM data; and a multi-omics data library for predictive modeling.
“Software is an increasingly important offering that Berkeley Lab provides to industry and the research community,” said Paul Adams, the lab’s associate director for biosciences. “More than 100 Lab researchers and developers and our partners have helped create these tools for many years, a significant investment of resources to support bioscience research and development worldwide.”
The main contributors to these software tools are the Biosciences Area divisions of Berkeley Lab, as well as the laboratory’s Computational Research Division and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Other contributors come from other DOE national laboratories and academic institutions.
The development of these software packages was only possible because of significant investments by the US Department of Energy in facilities and world-class research projects and programs, such as the Advanced Light Source, the Joint Genome Institute, the Joint BioEnergy Institute and the Agile BioFoundry. The National Institutes of Health provided significant funding for the PHENIX software, which is also partially supported by industry partners.
