Why U.S. Poker Players Care More About Payment Speed Than Game Variety

30 October 2026

Online poker players in the U.S. place a higher priority on fast payouts and generous bonuses than on the variety of games offered, according to multiple industry surveys. While game selection remains important, the ability to quickly cash out winnings and access enticing promotional offers increasingly drives player loyalty and site choice.

Surveys point to payment speed as a leading factor

A February 2022 PayNearMe study surveyed 2,051 U.S. iGaming bettors and found that 46% consider the ease of making deposits just as crucial as bonus offerings (48%) and access to their favorite online games (47%). Nearly twice as many respondents (39%) cited slow withdrawal processes as a pain point compared with slow deposits (29%).

For 17% of bettors, encountering payment problems when signing up led them to immediately abandon a new iGaming app, according to PayNearMe's findings. This suggests that operators risk losing a significant portion of potential players if they falter in the payments arena.

Paysafe's September 2022 survey took a deeper dive, asking U.S. sports bettors what factors influenced their choice of online gambling platform. The ability to cash out quickly emerged as the top priority, with 37% calling this critical. This ranked above brand reputation (32%), promotions (28%), competitive odds (27%), and markets offered (11%).

Queue frustration with slow payouts

The Paysafe study also uncovered a strong link between payout speed and overall player satisfaction. 79% said waiting too long for a withdrawal gave them a negative impression of a sportsbook. Two-thirds considered a 24-hour payout to be reasonable, while 32% expected payments to be instantaneous. Among regular players, defined as those making seven or more bets per week, 41% said withdrawals should be immediate.

"These results underscore that when players trust a brand to pay out their winnings promptly, they are much more likely to continue using that platform and recommend it to others," concluded Paysafe in its report. "This is true for new players considering where to open their first account and for existing players deciding which platform gets their next deposit."

Play variety still factors in, but plays second fiddle

Notably, the surveyed players saw game variety as important, but it consistently ranked below the speed and reliability of cashing out their winnings. In its 2023 iGaming report, Optimove found that 50% of players considered a wide variety of games and options important when choosing a site, but this trailed "fast and reliable payment methods" (58%) and "attractive bonuses and promotions" (53%).

Further, game variety ranked as the third most commonly cited reason, at 56%, when players were considering trying out a new platform. In first place was "welcome bonuses and promotions" (67%), and second was "site reputation and trustworthiness" (63%).

Poker sites respond with payments and bonuses

Some poker operators have already taken note, pushing crypto payouts that often clear in hours. They also offer rich welecome bonuses and ongoing promotions. Gaming America's 2023 review of the top casino poker sites for U.S. players highlighted generous bonuses such as a 100% match up to $1,500 as a key attraction.

In its 2023 review rankings, Gambling Sites noted that some leading U.S. poker platforms offer "instant cashout" or "speed payouts" as features. In promotions, it points to regular daily draws and sit-and-gos.

What this means for poker operators

While a deep game selection can still lure some players, the betting trends and player surveys send a clear message to U.S. poker operators: competitors' money management and promotional offerings are a critical battleground. Shaving hours or days off payout times, offering generous two-part refer-a-friend bonuses, rewarding frequent cashouts - operators will likely find that optimizing these aspects of their offering attracts and retains players even when they can't expand their game slate.

The key learning for U.S. poker operators, then, appears to be this: deepening the casino offerings can work, but operators must ensure they can match competitive speeds and bonuses. Not doing so risks ceding potential players to competitors offering richer bonuses, better payment processing, and faster payouts.
