When it comes to choosing an online casino, U.S. players increasingly prioritize swift payouts over generous bonuses or even a site's brand pedigree. In Paysafe's 2022 research, 37% of respondents cited fast payouts as the most important factor in deciding where to play, edging out brand reputation (32%), promotions (28%), and competitive odds (27%).
Fast payouts matter not just for acquisition, but also for player retention. Paysafe's 2023 study of U.S., Canadian, and U.K. online sports bettors found 36% are drawn to sportsbooks with quick, easy payout options. PayNearMe's 2022 iGaming survey reinforced this, with 39% of players citing slow withdrawals as their top pain point. Nearly half (49%) said access to their preferred withdrawal method would lead them to play - and cash out - more frequently.
Mismanaged payouts can be a retention killer. In a 2023 survey by research firm Sapio, seven out of ten U.S. sports bettors said they would abandon a sportsbook after contending with cash-out issues. The survey of 4,300 active and prospective sports bettors across several U.S. states drove the point home: When selecting a platform, 41% of Americans prioritized "quick and easy" payout options.
"Quick" has proven to be a relative term in practice. Paysafe's 2022 study revealed that more than two-thirds of players consider a 24-hour payout to be "reasonable". Meanwhile, 32% said payouts should be instantaneous. Among frequent players placing seven wagers per week or more, that number jumps to 41% expecting immediate access to their funds.
As a result, online gaming operators have moved to ensure that payout speed is up to players' high expectations. DraftKings, BetRivers, and Caesars are among the major platforms now promising same-day or next-day payouts if funds aren't held as required for responsible gaming purposes. E-wallets and pay options like Play+ and PayPal are repeatedly cited as the fastest payout methods available.
But operators can't simply ensure funding is sent at speed and call it a day. A U.S. bettor's relationship with a gaming brand extends beyond the course of a single transaction. A slow, complicated, or error-ridden payout can leave a lasting negative impression - and turn a customer off the brand for good.
"Enabling fast, frictionless payouts is about much more than delivering on a game or bet," writes Paysafe. "It's about delivering on the player's gaming experience - past, present, and future." In an ever-competitive space where many product features are a commodity, payouts remain a key factor that operators can get right or get wrong - for good or for ill.
Of course, "fast" in Vegas means something different than it did before the American Gaming Association released its 2017 "Responsible Marketing Code for U.S. Gaming" guidelines. The code made it illegal to immediately grant customers access to their winnings when a "know your customer" or responsible gaming check wasn't immediately passed. For operators to get their payouts delivered to a player even faster, they must make sure they are doing their responsible gaming homework correctly.
