How Long the Bans Last
Most bans come in terms, but Michigan’s program puts players on a lifetime ban by default. Pennsylvania offers a choice of 1-year or 5-year terms. California excludes players until a later removal form is submitted.
Violation Consequences
Violating self-exclusion carries consequences beyond a trespass notice. In New Jersey, anything a self-excluded player wins at a casino is forfeit. And California bans self-excluded patrons from all licensed gambling establishments. In Pennsylvania, to get back on the list, a violator waits until the term ends, submits a removal request, IDs in person and waits up to 5 days.
Getting Off the List
Pennsylvania lets players apply for removal by submitting a form and showing ID. For New York, players can get the document from an online site or a casino. California mirrors this setup: a completed form marks the start of the removal process.
Why the Differences Matter
The length of self-exclusion and removal rules vary across states. For example, California requires a removal form to end exclusion. In contrast, Pennsylvania requires a removal request after the term ends. Meanwhile, New Jersey forfeits any of a violator’s earnings, and Michigan permanently bans players.
In the end, whether the ban is fixed, lifetime or under review, many exclusion programs require a separate request and review to remove a person’s name. For example, Pennsylvania deletes a player’s record within 5 business days after getting a full removal form. So, even when the term ends, removal has to be requested.
