Good day, fellow gamblers. W-2Gs are the tax form for gambling winnings, specifically the IRS reporting form. Here you go:

The Boxes You Need to Know

Box 1 shows the total gambling winnings amount. Include payments that meet or exceed the thresholds, such as when payout is at least 300 times a bet. Box 2 contains the date of the winning event, not the date the money was paid. Box 3 identifies the wager type, such as a Daily Double if the wager was not a regular race bet.

But don't forget about federal income tax withholding: the amount already deducted and in Box 4. Include that directly on your 1040 or 1040-SR as a tax credit.

Your Identifying Information

The payer needs to verify your name, address, and tax identification number to avoid backup withholding. Provide two forms of ID, such as a driver's license or passport. That TIN entered in Box 9 should match what you file under.

Make sure to include the Cashier and/or Window Number making the winning payment in either Box 8 or 10.

What to Do if Your W-2G Is Missing or Got Your S S# Wrong

If you cannot get the casino to correct it or it never arrives, you may contact the IRS by the end of February for assistance. The IRS treats W-2Gs like any other missing or incorrect 1099.

What Each Box Means for Your Tax Return

Once you get a corrected W-2G, note those amounts in the correct boxes on your 1040 or 1040-SR, especially the withholding in Box 4.

What's Up with those Other Boxes?

The W-2G form includes Boxes 5 through 18, but these fields are primarily for the casino and might not always be present on a player's copy. The exact meanings of these state boxes, if you're seeing them, would likely be your regional reporting requirements.

Note that a missing or corrected W-2G uses the same rules as other forms, so check IRS guidance for any common issues that affect your individual reporting or withholding.
