When the UK Gambling Commission suspended the operating licences of BresBet Ltd and Bet St George Ltd on 28 August 2026, it sent a critical message to players: Withdraw your funds while you still can.

The regulator placed the suspension on BresBet and Bet St George, but explicitly allowed customers to access their funds and cash out of both sites. Licence suspension "does not prevent either operator from allowing consumers to access their accounts and withdrawing funds."

However, the Gambling Commission’s licence review guidance makes clear that the punitive effect of suspension is to suspend regulated activities. That means that previously active accounts would be paused—and that may stop ongoing withdrawals in play.

Balance, Pending Withdrawals, and Suspensions

The news that BresBet Ltd and Bet St George remain accessible for withdrawals is a welcome early finding. The Gambling Commission’s guidance on restrictions on withdrawing deposit and deposit winnings gives players the right to withdraw without restriction, except to comply with General Regulatory Obligations. The Commission's guidance does not list those obligations.

In one case, though, the process failed. Sahara Sands Casino’s terms explicitly state that funds remaining in an account at closure cannot be withdrawn, including those that are pending withdrawal. That standing raises the possibility that the suspension notice itself failed to catch pending cash-outs in play.

What Happens to Player Money?

When a real money online casino suspends or closes, the road forward for player money gets complicated.

The critical factor is not whether funds are segregated, the UK Gambling Commission’s public materials clarify. Segregation alone does not guarantee player protection in insolvency. In the UK, certain protection arrangements may offer players reassurance about payouts during closure or insolvency. But worldwide, segregation alone is no assurance.

In practice, many offshore operators use segregated funds, real banking systems, and insurance packages to protect player payouts. But very few explicitly guarantee them in their terms. The UKGC has not issued an order listing the order of payment during an insolvency.

Bonus Money and Promotional Credit

Bonus balances are heavily controlled. Sahara Sands Casino terms specify that bonuses “are not considered cash, and are not meant to be cashed out but used to fund further bets under the rules and restrictions set out for the bonus.” The same terms specify that bonus money is “non-withdrawable” and is deducted from winnings during payout.

The harshness of bonus terms puts them in an unstated but clear utilitarian hierarchy. If funds have to be prioritized or limited, the non-payout bonus fund is the first to be left unredeemed.

Why Offshore Closures Are Harder to Read

While the UK has established guidance on player protection, the offshore gambling industry does not share a similar standardization. The UK Gambling Commission has a limited reach into the offshore sector, and there is no clear order in which player funds will be paid.

The net result is that a player in an offshore casino may not have the same kind of protection as a player in a UK-regulated gambling site.

What to Save Before the Site Disappears

Given the post-play limitation on what guaranties apply, players facing a possible casino closure should adopt the following documentation practices:

Players should save screenshots of their main balance, recent deposits, withdrawals, and pending transactions.

Players should save their transaction history, including dates, types, and amounts.

Players should save transaction notifications from the operator.

Players should maintain their own ID documents.

The last wishes of a regulator are that a player will see a pending withdraw or cash out as a priority payment, but the actual position is more ambiguous, especially for offshore casinos. In general, the best argument is to separate all forms of cash play from pending play and promotions, before the suspension or closure takes effect.
