How to Spot a Bluffer in Poker

Poker is a fast-paced strategy battle that requires utmost wit and quick thinking. Knowing the rules of the game is important, but what’s equally as useful in taking home a successful win, is knowing how to read cues correctly to understand the actions of others; here are some things to look out for when trying to spot a bluffer in poker:

  • Excessive eye-contact with players and not looking at his/her hand, or absolutely no eye contact with players
  • Lack of physical movement – remaining still to ensure he/she doesn’t give anything away

Conversation

  • Sudden change in energy level – if a player who has been quite or talkative suddenly becomes the exact opposite
  • Sudden initiation of a topic of conversation unrelated to the game to divert attention from the hand

Betting Pattern

  • Untimely raises – pay attention to the betting pattern of an opponent, is he/she betting you into the flop after you raised the pre-flop?
  • Betting small – someone bluffing often will not want to lose too much, if they’re called
  • Betting big – a sudden leap in the bet when he/she expects no one to have the guts or capability to match

Above all, trust your instincts to know when to match and fold. Understanding the signs of bluffing will not only help you to spot potential loopholes, but also to better your game and enable success on the playing field.
