Mohegan Sun Rising Again?

The Native American Casino ‘Mohegan Sun’ just could not catch a break. The billion dollar casino had, for a long time, been unable to refinance its major debts, which came to rise as an effect of the global financial crisis. The Native American Casino had once been a very popular choice because of its cultural significance and lack of federal legislative impact.

Recently, in a bid to widen their span, the board of trustees of the Mohegan Sun placed a bid on land in the Boston area, as a means to extend their presence into Massachusetts. After seven years of bidding, unfortunately the Mohegan Sun was forced to set on this idea when rival bidder Steve Wynn, who also has a presence in Las Vegas, the hub of gambling in the United States, won the tender instead.

This poses major risks for Mohegan Sun because of the increase in competition in surrounding areas. However, this may not be the case, because the Native American Casino has had a presence in the East for many years already. Many residents of the state have become very familiar to the famous casino, with its lucrative hall and dazzling setting. And it is very unlikely that any loss of patrons would be of a long term nature.

Furthermore it seems the Mohegan Sun has bounced back from this fall, in August, when the board announced that they have in fact purchased half of the Philadelphia Wings, a National Lacrosse League (NLL) team. The team plans to move to the Uncasville area and begin playing for its new joint owners in December.

This is, of course the second time the Casino has acquired a sports team in the past two decades, which seems to show that the Mohegan Sun is in fact climbing back up the ranks. The Casino that has always been a major rival to the Las Vegas and Atlantic City, may just continue to be so.
