The history of Mississippi casinos

There are only a handful states in America that can boast such high quality casino offerings. High stake poker and riverboat gambling started out as the most popular options and the state was actually known as the ‘Bettors Hub’ in the 1800’s. It was a place that offered the best of gambling options to people from all worlds in either humble shacks or in amazing resorts.

And as time went on, and throughout the century, attitudes to gambling started to shift. This said, there were always avenues where gamers could make their wagers all the way through the 1900’s. It wasn’t until the 1900’s though, that gambling of all types was fully regulated and authorized by the state, paving the way for plenty of safe and reputable gaming establishments across Mississippi today. In actuality, the gambling industry in Mississippi continues to strive to this day.

Mississippi Gambling Laws

Despite the intensive growth of gaming industries in some Mississippi regions (Gulfport, Biloxi), there are many gaming restrictions in this state. What makes it different from the majority of other states is the absence of the state lottery, as well as horse racing and pari-mutuel. Instead, you can enjoy a good choice of casinos with poker rooms or charity gambling.

Commercial Casinos

mississippi-commercial-casinoThere are around 30 commercial casinos all over Mississippi for those who want to play different slots and table games. The first casino, the Isle of Capri-Biloxi, was opened in 1992. Most casinos are found along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast. In Biloxi alone, you can find casinos all over the town that do not just promise a wide variety of games, but a huge number of options in dining and other forms of entertainment as well. The state law requires that you must be at least 21 years old to play in a casino. Note that the casinos on the Gulf Coast may temporarily close if there is a hurricane forecast to hit nearby.

Tribal Casinos

mississippi-TribalCasinosThe state of Mississippi signed a compact with the Choctaw Indians of Mississippi in 1992, but for now there are only three tribal casinos: Bok Homa Casino, Golden Moon Casino and Silver Star Casino. Bok Homa Casino offers only slots (including some new favorites such as Playboy and Hee-Haw), electronic blackjack, electronic roulette and video poker; in two others you can find all classic table games, Video Keno and a lot of poker rooms, as well as huge variety of slots.

Charitable Gaming

mississipi-charitablegamingIf you’d rather have a few games of Bingo or try your luck in a Raffle, charitable gaming is also allowed in Mississippi (from 1992) and regulated by the Mississippi gaming control board. There are a lot of bingo halls in many counties and three classes of bingo are licensed in this state: A, B, and C bingo (total amount of prizes varies from less than $2,500 to over $5,000). Like many other states, all these events are hosted by religious groups, veterans and other nonprofit organizations.

Poker

mississipi-pokerThough there are plenty of live poker rooms in the casinos, this doesn’t make online poker to the floor. There have been a few discussions in the past about bringing online poker into the state, but these discussions have not really resolved anything. However, in January 2015, Bill 306 or the Mississippi Lawful Internet Gaming Act was presented to regulate online poker. The main idea is to make online poker legal and allow people to play on the legalized sites that are fair and safe and permit only adults to gamble.

Online Gambling

Although this state remains open in terms of commercial casinos, tribal casinos and charitable gaming, there are still restrictions when it comes to online gaming.

 Lottery

As it has been mentioned above, the participation in a lottery and its advertising is prohibited in Mississippi with a penalty, ranging from a fine to imprisonment.
