Batavia Downs is the casino and harness racing track at Batavia, in New York. That is placed at Genesee County between Rochester and Buffalo just off of New York State Thruway, I-90. This started in 20 September 1940, and is oldest lighted harness racetrack at United States. Track is accurately 1/2 mile long.
In 1939, William Lefty Goldberg and the others selected Batavia, halfway between Rochester and Buffalo, for par-mutuel betting on horse races. William Zimmer, Harold Wishman, Frederick Strohm and Arthur Martin were stockholders at Monroe-Genesee Breeders Association. The predecessor to Genesee-Monroe Racing Association rented Genesee County Fairgrounds for the racing.
