NBA to Participate in Legal Sports Gambling

According to Adam Silver, a league commissioner of the National Basketball Association, legalized sports gambling in the United States is likely to spread, and the NBA expects to gain profit from it.

It is known that the NBA, along with other US professional sports leagues, have been part of the opposition in legalizing sports betting or sports gambling in New Jersey. However, they have come to the realization that legal sports gambling has become inevitable in the United States. Because of that, the basketball league expects to gain profit from the spreading of legal sports gambling in the United States, despite being unsupportive of New Jersey’s Governor, Christopher Christie’s plans to implement sports gambling.

According to Silver, “It’s inevitable that, if all these states are broke, that there will be legalized sports betting in more states than Nevada and we will ultimately participate in that.”

Moreover, Silver has also mentioned that if someone has a gentleman’s bet or a small wager in any kind of sports contest, it makes the person much more engaged in the sport. “That’s where we’re going to see it pay dividends. If people are watching a game and clicking to bet on their smart phones, which is what people are doing in the United Kingdom right now, then it’s much more likely you’re going to stay tuned for a long time,” Silver added.

Adam Silver, who has been part of the NBA for 22 years, has replaced David Stern as NBA league commissioner in February of this year. He said that he doesn’t really have any moral issues regarding sports betting. Also, the league already allows the different NBA teams to create marketing deals with casinos, so he does not see a reason not to further gain profit from the legalization of sports betting outside Nevada.

New Jersey Approves Sports Gambling Bill

Earlier this week, the state senate of New Jersey has finally approved the sports gambling bill and is now on its way to the desk of Governor Chris Christie for his signature. The assembly voted 73-4 in favor of passing the bill.

The approval of sports gambling has been a matter of discussion in New Jersey since 2011, when voters approved a non-binding policy legalizing the practice. However, Governor Christie signed the bill into law in 2012, legalizing sports betting in the state.
